The People Are United

I recently spent three days in a row greeting hundreds of people and talking to numerous voters at the Pan-O-Prog celebration in Lakeville. Two themes emerged: first, the state and federal governments are financially irresponsible; second, the problem is excessive spending, not a lack of tax collections.

What was most interesting to me is that this sentiment seems to transcend occupation, income, and political party identification. I talked with public union members, private union members, business owners, stay-at-home moms, and employees of large businesses. It didn't matter. Almost without exception these hard-working, honest people are afraid their state and nation are heading toward financial ruin, robbing their children and grandchildren of the freedom and opportunity that America has always offered.

California, New York, and many other big spending, "progressive" states are in serious financial trouble. Minnesota is not far behind. We will likely face a $6 billion deficit when the legislature convenes early next year. We have a choice to make. We can continue to spend, tax and regulate. Or, we can do the right thing and get our fiscal house in order without adding additional burdens to hard working families and business owners. If I am honored to serve in the Minnesota Senate I will be part of the solution, not a continuation of the problem.
